Washer Not Spinning But Making Noise?
Top 5 Causes
There is nothing more frustrating than hearing your washing machine humming, thumping, or whirring, only to open the lid and find a pool of soapy water and soaking wet clothes. If your washer is making noise but refuses to spin, it’s a clear sign that something is wrong under the hood.
Before you give up on laundry day, let’s look at the top 5 most common causes for this issue and how to solve them.
1. A Broken Drive Belt
The drive belt connects the motor to the drum. Over time, these belts can flip, melt, or simply snap. If you hear the motor running (a high-pitched whirring sound) but the drum isn’t moving, the belt is likely the culprit.
2. Faulty Lid Switch or Door Latch
For safety reasons, your washer will not spin if it thinks the lid is open. If the plastic switch is broken or the sensor has failed, the machine might fill with water and agitate, but it will stop dead when it’s time to spin.
3. Worn Motor Coupling
In many older top-loading machines, a small rubber and plastic part called a motor coupling connects the motor to the transmission. If you overload your machine too often, this part is designed to break to protect the motor from burning out.
4. Failed Shift Actuator (For Modern HE Washers)
Modern high-efficiency (HE) washers use a shift actuator to switch the transmission from agitating to spinning. If this part fails, the machine gets "confused." You might hear it clicking repeatedly as it tries—and fails—to engage the spin cycle.
5. Caught Objects in the Drain Pump
Sometimes the noise isn’t from the motor, but from a foreign object (like a coin, bobby pin, or bra wire) caught in the drain pump. If the washer can’t drain the water completely, it will never reach the high-speed spin cycle.
When to Call a Professional?
While checking for an unbalanced load is something you can do yourself, most of these repairs involve high-voltage components and heavy machinery. Attempting to DIY a transmission or motor repair can lead to more expensive damage or personal injury.
